HISTORY OF THE COMPANY, A FAMILY, A CITY, A WISH.

The brothers from Girona, Pere and Narcís Cornellà, started roasting coffee activity in May 1920. This initiative took place as a result of conversations about the country of Cuba with their father, Pere Cornellà Vidal, who has been in that Caribbean island serving in the colonial army of the Spanish King during the independence war. Coffee was one of the local products from that overseas colony. So, the coffee industry was established in Girona in 1920 and, since then, has persisted and developed in the course of nearly a century, always by the same family. It was a completely new activity and soon, Cafès Cornellà turn into the main supplier of roasted coffee in that region.

After the civil war in 1936 and the subsequent international isolation of the Spanish State, Pere Cornellà Reixach recovered business activity. By this time, the State Government was in charge of the coffee trade through the Commissioner of Supply and Transport (CAT), which was the responsible of setting sales prices and of authorizing the purchase of the product as well. Concepts about coffee applied by the administration did not match the quality of international standards. This interventionist management fixed the purchase price and conditioned the origin of green coffee in the Spanish state to bilateral exchanges with producer countries.
